Hey friends, thanks for stopping by as we explore two family-friendly locations in the Southern United States.
Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, share a tumultuous past as both were prime ports of entry for the British and United States slave trade in North America, as well as war between the indigenous populations of the time. But, due to this rich history and unbelievable natural beauty, these "sister cities" are lovely for all in the family. Which is best for a multiracial, queer family? Let's break down the highlights of both destinations.
Easy Breezy in Charleston
There is nothing more "fun" during spring or fall break than a car trip with the kiddo(s). Every kid is different, but inevitably, you learn to slow your expectations on getting to a location. Upon arrival, though, there is nothing like allowing them to get out of the car and head toward the beach to get all those wiggles out. Charleston has a host of wonderfully family-friendly beaches. From laid-back Folly Beach to the pristine Isle of Palms, a community speaking to your style of vacation awaits. We have vacationed with our extended family at the Wild Dunes resort on Isle of Palms, and we loved the access to in-house activities, various pools, and outdoor spaces to accommodate kids and grown-ups alike. Folly Beach, on the other hand, has a thriving LGBTQ+ community of all demographics, a host of queer businesses and bars, and excellent waves for surfing.
Downtown Charleston highlights a mix of new and old Southern charm. Rainbow Row, the Charleston Market, and the Riley Waterfront Pier and Park with a Pinnaple-shaped fountain are must-visits. However, don't overlook the Hazel Parker Playground, a perfect kid and dog park in the lower Peninsula, within walking distance of Rainbow Row and the Waterfront. I'd be remiss not to mention the educational opportunities through both self-curated and guided tours but also the new International African American Museum & Garden, which will be a hit with families. Charleston has a lot going for it and it is hard to think of a coastal town with better food. If you go to Charleston Pride be sure to find some shade and enjoy a pool during the fun!
New Gems Mixed With Old South in Savannah
Savannah's laid-back and hospitable vibe shines for all ages and is particularly noticeable for young visitors. The historic squares and new venues near the waterfront welcome the nuanced balance needed for families. There is even a rainbow flag or two. River Street candy shop, historic Forsyth Park, and the train depot are always winners for all ages. The up-and-coming arts scene and revitalization of areas outside the downtown and waterfront are most inspiring, but the historic districts's green squares and shops are the heartbeat of Savannah. Head over to the Plant Riverside District to explore. The dinosaur, gems, and old ship gear displays in the JW Marriot atrium are a fun break with kids before grabbing ice cream and watching the ships roll by in Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
Check out neighborhoods around the hip Starland Yard outdoor food hall. The area gives homage to its historic black patronage while still encouraging acceptance. Providing locally owned soul food restaurants and the Savannah African Art Museum, right near LGBTQ+ friendly bars, theaters, and events. You can beat the heat by joining the always-welcome Tybee Island beach bums less than 40 minutes by car or 1h30 by bike. Savannah Pride is rockin', but don't just take my word for it and start planning your family trip.
The Winner
Both Charleston and Savannah will give you a great mix of activity and Southern charm. I have to give the upper hand to Savannah, Georgia for a more direct approach to inclusion. But, again, don't take my word for it - what has been your experience with these infamous Southern gems? Are there any other coastal cities worth a LGBTQ+ family holiday?
